Let There be Light at the Edge of Darkness - Los Angeles Travel Photographer

Dark clouds rolling,
angry waves crashing,
making every sound louder than the last one.

The bright daylight that was omnipresent a second ago rapidly diminished, receding farther into the horizon. Only glimpse of rays peeked from time to time through the cracks that the clouds occasionally failed to seal up.

I remember this scene vividly as if it was yesterday. We were on the west coast of Noto Peninsula in Japan, en route to Wajima city.

The recent earthquake on the New Year’s day in Japan brought
unfathomable devastations to the area, Wajima being the hardest hit - roads ruptured, buildings toppled, houses reduced to debris, and lives, lives that were forced to come to a screeching halt, alive, lost or unaccounted for …

My heart aches for the many that are displaced, not knowing where their loved ones are and dealing with no water or power, and
no shortage of harsh winter weather.

I pray that this image would offer an ounce of comfort in that there is light
at the edge of darkness, because with light, there is hope.

“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.”
— Desmond Tutu

Holiday Greetings 2021 - Jean Huang Photography

I’ve watched this tree weathering all kinds of storm and only coming out to stand more beautifully. In fact, I think it’s this tree that makes the scene more so.

To some, it’s a famous tree (see my Instagram posts with it
here, here, and here). To me, it’s the most beautiful palm tree in the whole southern California. :D It’s near where I live and I get to see the beauty of this tree more than that of any others.

At this time of year when reflection of the past and vision of the future occurs, I wanted to send my holiday greetings along with this tree. As many of the restrictions are still around on what we can do and where we can go, I wish that you can see through the mundane and feel pleasure from the unusual that you discover.

In the coming year, I resort to continue to honor the true beauty and present fine art from the day-to-day, the not-so-famous, and the “normal”, be it of the people, the landscape, or “The Tree”. ;-)

Until we meet/talk again, happy holidays and have fun rediscovering the unusual in the usual!

Ciao!

Girl Extraordinaire in Canada - Los Angeles Travel Photographer

When we arrived at the lodge in the remote Kaska Coast of Canada, a young girl came out in vibrant red to welcome us. Who knew, we would be seeing her everywhere in the next 10 days.

She’d be on the back of skidoo before sunrise, leading the caravan of komatiq (in cree language, sled designed to travel on snow and ice) in negative 50 degrees.

She’d be there helping teach us how to start a fire (wilderness survival 101) with no match.

At the end of the day, when we barely made our way to our room (those in the subtropical/tropical weather won’t understand how much time it takes to take off your clothes :-) ), she’d already changed and was ready to pour wine and serve dinner when we arrived in the dining room.

I’ve never based my life choices on my gender. But this girl impressed me by the amount of talent and energy such a slender figure can hold. The best that I could do was to focus on what I was familiar with, that is to photograph, while trying to survive the harsh environment.

She said she’s our lodge manager. I think she’s a girl extraordinaire. Her name is Bella.

Let’s celebrate the talented girls/women in this world every day. Only when all talents in this world are tapped will we as human race reach our full potential.
