When Bison Spoke, We Listened - Los Angeles Travel Photographer

We woke up at the sound of the alarm and sprang to action.

There was no one around. The only sound was from our struggle with the thick snow underneath. Our plan was to explore the other โ€œgeysersโ€ close to the Old Faithful Geyser. We wanted to get there before the sun made it above the horizon and we had already scouted the (only) way the afternoon before.

The air was cold and crisp, but I felt my perspiration as we turned around the corner of the Old Faithful Visitor Center. I paused and looked out to the trail that stretches from our feet.

Boy, was I happy I did. Through the vague dawn air, I saw something on the only piece of ground thatโ€™s not frozen or covered in snow. Within a stoneโ€™s throw, there were bison sleeping. Although mild-looking, an animal that weighs up to one ton can move at a fast speed, too fast for us to escape the impact. Let alone thereโ€™s multiples of such odds of impact. Our internal debate ended quickly.

Thanks to these bison, we stuck around the area and got to experience a different Old Faithful Geyser than anticipated.

As the world is fighting COVID-19, I canโ€™t help but wonder how long nature has being crying/yelling at us before it gave us such a blow that finally got our attention.

Women in Shadow - Los Angeles Travel Photographer

I knew Morocco would be a country of many unexpected. I did not expect to feel uncomfortable walking down the streets in my short sleeves, the plain ones that women wear in the โ€œWesternโ€ cultures.

I consider myself a pretty fearless woman. But when thereโ€™s cafes occupied by solely male gender who do nothing but sitting there and looking out the street, every inch of bare skin thatโ€™s being seen by those peering eyes makes me uncomfortable. At those time, for some odd reason, I envied Moroccan women. Covered up and not showing skin or shapes, they may be free from the eyes of the opposite gender. They seem to stay in the shadow, or sometimes are like a shadow, dark and muted.

Hello, is it me you're looking for? - Los Angeles Travel Photographer

It was a rare opportunity. I had never observed or photographed polar bears that close. We dressed like polar bears. Moved clumsily in tight space trying to work the angles for the best composition...

Polar bear on the move. Adrenaline spiked. Click clickโ€ฆ Click click clickโ€ฆ

Oopsโ€ฆ My body may be following the polar bear. But something that I clipped underneath layers of clothing chose to fall at the most inconvenient time.

I quickly got on my feet, back facing what I was photographing. Picked up the trouble-maker and reattached it underneath my layers of clothing. At this point, I raised my head.

There she was, all by herself, surrounded by water, vast body of water. She turned around and locked eyes with me, as if she was asking โ€œHello, is it me youโ€™re looking for?โ€

Mesmerized, I forgot what I was photographing 5 seconds agoโ€ฆ

Today is International Polar Bear Day. This encounter with the polar bear came to mind. I wish that her wait for ice has ended and she was able to travel on it to where her food is.
